Operation Get Pre-Baby Body Back: The Start

It’s been 8 weeks since I gave birth and I’m ready to start really working on shedding the pregnancy weight. My total weight gain for my pregnancy was 33 lbs. 8 weeks later I am down 18.5 lbs, leaving me with 14.5 lbs to go before I am back at my pre-pregnancy weight. Those first 18 lbs came off pretty easily. The first 5 weeks after birth I did little to no exercise. Once I got the all clear by my doctor at 5 1/5 weeks post birth I started walking with Leah in the jogging stroller. Almost every day since then I have walked between 3-5 miles or jogged around 2 miles. Although I know this is a great start, I’m starting to feel as though I need to do more, not only to kick start my body into shedding these last 14 lbs, but also to get my body back into the shape it was pre-baby. Enter Jillian Michaels:
I have heard great things about Jillian’s workout DVDs from both my older sister (healthontherun running extraordinaire) and my mother, both of whom are in such great shape that I trust them whole heartedly with any and all “get in shape” advice they may have. So when I found a pack of three on sale on Amazon for $25 I thought “What the heck, let’s get this weight loss rolling” and ordered them right away.

I’ll be honest, I tried out the “Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism” video today and I practically died. For someone who prided herself on being in darn good shape 9 months ago, I am one big wobbly ball of jello today. Okay, that may be  a bit of an exaggeration, but that is definitely how I felt after this 45 minute workout. Also, my core strength is pretty much non-existent these days, so I did have to modify some of her core exercises to make them a bit easier so I could actually do them. And even though I wanted to reach through my TV and punch Jillian in the face every time she said, “This next exercise is a killer!” I sure felt great once I was done (minus my shaking muscles).

My plan is to rotate these workouts, doing one a day, 5 days a week for the next 2 months while still maintaining my speed walks and jogs (mostly because I enjoy my walks/jogs with Leah and I know she does too). It’s going to be hard, but to be honest, I would rather kick my butt with exercise than give up any of the desserts/sweets I eat on a daily basis. I suck at dieting and I’m not about to give up my ice cream now. So for the next two months (officially starting Monday) I will be blogging about my weekly progress. For those of you who could really care less about my baby weight loss journey, I apologize, but I need the motivation to get myself to do this and if I’m blogging about my progress AND posting weekly pictures of my post baby body (ugh) than I will be much more inclined not to give up and actually work hard to get the results I want. Because in the end, it’s really not all about losing the weight, but rather about feeling good about my body and getting back into shape. And if in the end I also get killer abs, well then so be it, I’m not one to complain.

So here we go. The 2 month Jillian Michaels Challenge officially starts on Monday and will last for 2 straight months. (Which is perfect timing with the holidays around the corner. The last thing I need is to gain more weight from all the Christmas cookies I totally plan on eating).
